Every Piece of Horse Gear, Up Off the Ground

Open or closed? Open is for quick access and bulkier gear that sits securely on its own. Closed has a raised end, so it's the one for ropes, loops and straps — anything that could work itself off.

Almost nobody buys all one size. A typical first order is a row of MIDI for bridles and halters, two or three MEGA for rugs, a couple of closed hooks for the float, and one basket for the grooming kit.

It comes down to the profile of the sheeting, not the brand of it. A magnet needs a flat face to grip — around 50mm of flat steel for full holding strength.

Flat sheet and ribbed cladding — full strength. Wide flat pans between raised ribs. That's the profile on almost every modern shed, stable, container and float, and it's exactly what you're looking at in the shed and barn wall photo above.

True corrugated — the wavy profile — isn't recommended. The magnet can only touch the top of each curve, so the contact patch is tiny and holding power drops away sharply. It's the most common question we get and that's the straight answer.

The 5-second test: hold a fridge magnet flat against your wall. If it sits flush and grips firmly, a Gator will hold far harder. If it rocks on a curve or barely grabs, you need a flat mounting point.

That's what the Wall Target is for. Fix one to a corrugated shed, or to timber, brick or render, and you've created a flat steel mounting point wherever you want one — every Gator then clicks straight onto it.

All advertised holding capacities are tested on 16-gauge steel, about 1.6mm galvanised — which is what sheds, stables and float panels are actually built from.

Yes — it's one of the most common ways our customers use them. Use the closed hooks in there. The magnet holds fine on the move; what catches people out is gear bouncing off an open hook on a rough track. The raised end on a closed hook is what stops that.

Float and trailer panels are usually the same ribbed steel as a shed wall, so you get the full rating. And because nothing is drilled or screwed, you can lift the hooks out when you unload and use them in the shed during the week.

In practice, a MEGA takes a soaked winter rug, a full hay net or a water bucket. A MIDI comfortably carries a bridle, a halter and a lead rope. The Mini handles whips, crops and spare straps.

Those are shear figures — the downward load a hook actually carries, which is the number that matters on a wall. They're tested on 16-gauge steel, the thickness real sheds and floats are made from, and testing shows up to twice the holding power of comparable magnetic hooks.

Think in walls, not hooks. Gear is spread across four of them — the shed or barn wall, the tack room, the stables and rug rail, and the float — and every one of those is steel you're currently not using.

A wall that actually works usually takes three to four hooks. Three MIDI will hang a bridle, a halter and a lead rope properly rather than piling them on one peg — that's the Core 3 Pack Midi Bundle at $84.95. Add two closed hooks for the float and a basket for the grooming kit and you've done the whole property. A setup that size comfortably clears free shipping over $250.

Because nothing is fixed, the same hooks follow the gear — the rug wall in May becomes the fly veil wall in November.

No drilling. No screws. No holes. Nothing is fixed to the wall — which matters if you're on a leased property, or in a shed you'd simply rather not put holes in. No screw holes also means no rust bleeding down the sheeting in two winters.

The body is smooth moulded and powder-coated, so it sits against the sheeting rather than biting into it. Finishes do vary and we can't promise a hook will never mark bare steel — but nothing about fitting one is permanent. Lift the lever, reposition, click it back down.

Gators are outdoor-friendly and are used on exterior shed walls, in open bays and inside floats. A soaked winter rug is one of the things a MEGA hook gets bought for most — 20kg is 20kg, wet or dry.

The one thing that does reduce holding strength is anything sitting between the magnet and the steel: heavy grime, grease, thick paint or a heavy coating all cut down the contact. Wipe the spot before you mount it and that's the whole maintenance routine.

Not on a hook. A saddle needs a rack that supports the tree, and a hook will distort the panels over time.

You have 14 days from receiving your order to change your mind. The item needs to be unused, uninstalled, in saleable condition, and in its original packaging with all attachments.
